KUALA LUMPUR: Police have recorded a total of 120 cases involving fatal accidents due to driving under the influence of drugs and alcohol in the last four years, says Bukit Aman.
Bukit Aman Traffic Investigation and Enforcement Department director Comm Datuk Seri Muhammed Hasbullah Ali, at a press conference in Bukit Aman Wednesday (July 29), meanwhile, said that police had made 949 arrests of drivers under the influence of alcohol in the first six months of 2026 from 1,634 police operations aimed at drink driving.
Statistics showed that this was an increase from last year where a total of 692 operations lead to 930 arrests the entire year.
Kuala Lumpur recorded the most arrests this year with 268 suspects caught, followed by Johor with 223 arrests. A total of 182 arrests were made in Selangor as well.
“Our investigations also show that the age group with the most arrests were those aged between 31 and 40 years old with 352 arrests. This shows most are in the active driving age,” he said.
He added that operations will be intensified to trace and stop such incidents from occurring.
“Our laws are sufficient for now but we are in the midst of suggesting to both the Transport Ministry and the Attorney General's Chambers to review the punishments in the laws.
“The more operations we carry out, the more we catch so it is as if the people don’t care about the matter. Awareness starts from with within.
“We are most worried about law-abiding road users who could inadvertently become victims,” he said.
