Abstain from Urban Renewal Bill vote, Hamzah urges Sabah, Sarawak MPs

KUALA LUMPUR: The Opposition has urged MPs from Sabah and Sarawak to not vote on the Urban Renewal Bill (URA), says Datuk Seri Hamzah Zainudin (pic).

He then said that the Opposition calls for the URA to be postponed.

“Umno MPs who all this while have been defending the B40 who cannot afford expensive homes, we appeal to you to abstain if you do not want to vote against.

If they abstain, I will tell the people that Umno MPs are with the people,” he told a press conference in the Dewan Rakyat on Thursday (Aug 28).

“We will tell them how many Umno MPs voted and how many abstained,” he added.

The Opposition chief said that since housing loans take over 30 years to be repaid, there is no need for rejuvenation.

Hamzah also said Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim had shown him a photo of a 30-year-old building.

He said what hardcore poor housing programmes (PPRT) require are maintenance and rejuvenation and not redevelopment.

Meanwhile, Opposition chief whip Datuk Seri Takiyuddin Hassan (PN-Kota Baru) said the House secretary has yet to notify Perikatan Nasional on how many of its MPs will be allotted slots to debate the bill.
