PUTRAJAYA: Every education policy must promote equitable opportunities as Malaysia advances in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM), digitalisation and artificial intelligence (AI), says Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim.
The Prime Minister said he was concerned that technological advancements could widen existing disparities if policymakers were not careful.
“We already have two categories of people — the elite and those who are left behind.
“Then we introduce STEM, and digitalisation and AI… the gap becomes even wider,” he said during his address to the Education Ministry’s monthly assembly on Tuesday (July 28).
He said policymakers in the Education Ministry and across the government must be “highly sensitive and creative” when formulating policies.
“Every policy we introduce must promote equitable distribution and equal opportunities,” he said.
He also said meritocracy should be balanced with what he described as “justice as fairness”, noting that students should not be expected to compete on equal footing when they do not have access to the same opportunities.
