1st LD Writethru: Moldovan parliament approves new PM, government

SOFIA, July 21 (Xinhua) -- Moldova's parliament, in a confidence vote on Tuesday, approved Vasile Tofan as the country's new prime minister and the full cabinet list submitted by Tofan.

The vote on Tofan's nomination drew 53 votes in favor, securing a parliamentary majority.

Under the Constitution, President Maia Sandu will formally appoint the new government following the vote.

Tofan, 44, has long been active in private equity investment and is a well-known investor and entrepreneur in Moldova. According to the official Moldpres news agency, his policy priorities include advancing European integration, deepening institutional reforms and promoting economic development.

Former Prime Minister Alexandru Munteanu resigned on July 3, triggering the automatic dissolution of his government. On July 11, Sandu nominated Tofan as prime minister candidate after consultations with parliamentary factions.

Under the Constitution, the prime minister-designate must submit the government program and cabinet list to parliament for a confidence vote within 15 days of the nomination.

The new cabinet list submitted by Tofan shows a high degree of continuity, with most ministers in the previous government retaining their posts and only four portfolios -- agriculture and food industry, finance, health and culture -- going to new faces.
