Penang man slashes wife, injures himself after quarrel


BALIK PULAU: A 28-year-old woman almost had her throat slit by her husband during a domestic spat after he reportedly attacked her with a kitchen knife, police said.

Balik Pulau OCPD Asst Comm Sazalee Adam said the incident occurred at around 6am on Wednesday (Aug 27) at a house in Sungai Ara.

"The victim's mother heard her daughter screaming from upstairs and went up to check.

"She went into her daughter's bedroom and found her son-in-law (attacking) her daughter.

"He was said to be in the midst of trying to slit the victim's throat," he told the media.

ACP Sazalee said the victim's mother managed to pull her daughter to safety.

"As she was taking her daughter out of the bedroom, she said she saw her son-in-law turn the knife on himself, slitting his left wrist and neck.

"Both the victim and her husband have been taken to the Penang Hospital for treatment

"The victim sustained neck injuries and is in stable condition.

"The suspect is conscious but in critical condition," he said.

ACP Sazalee said the victim and the suspect, 30, have been married for six years and have a child.

"They are teachers in a school in this district.

"They were both educated in Mandarin as a second language in a university in Beijing, China," he said.

ACP Sazalee added that the cause of the incident is still being determined.

"The victim and her husband are said to have no prior issues with each other.

"Based on information from witnesses, they lived in harmony.

"The husband has no known mental issues, and there is no record of them fighting or having issues previously," he said.

He said the case is being investigated under Section 307 of the Penal Code for attempted murder.
