E-commerce revenue hit RM625bil in first half of 2025, says Domestic Trade Ministry

PETALING JAYA: Malaysia's e-commerce sector recorded RM625bil in revenue in the first half of 2025, a RM13.5bil increase compared to the same period last year, according to the Domestic Trade and Cost of Living Ministry.

Its secretary-general Datuk Seri Mohd Sayuthi Bakar (pic) cited data from the Statistics Department (DOSM) showing projected total e-commerce revenue for 2024 reaching RM1.23 trillion.

He said the ministry remains committed to creating a balanced ecosystem that ensures both consumer protection and sustainable business growth.

"E-commerce platforms have made significant contributions to the national economy and raised living standards, providing Malaysians from all backgrounds with opportunities to generate income and participate in the economy," he said at the Shopee Brands Summit 2025.

Mohd Sayuthi also highlighted strategic partnerships between the ministry and e-commerce platforms, citing a RM2mil allocation to Shopee's "Buy Malaysian Goods" campaign in 2019, which helped local sellers generate RM70mil in sales.

"This government initiative supports local traders by expanding their market reach," he added, urging consumers to back local brands amid current tariff challenges. - Bernama
