Perikatan's bid to refer PM to Parliament committee over Batu Puteh issue rejected

KUALA LUMPUR: The Opposition’s bid to refer Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim to the Parliament’s rights and privileges committee for allegedly misleading the House on the Batu Puteh issue has been unsuccessful.

Perikatan Nasional chief whip Datuk Seri Takiyuddin Hassan said the motion was rejected by Dewan Rakyat Speaker Tan Sri Johari Abdul.

Speaking to reporters at the main entrance of the Parliament building here on Tuesday (Aug 26), Takiyuddin said the grounds for the rejection was that it was related to the recommendations of the royal commission of inquiry (RCI) of the territorial dispute.

“My motion was rejected because it was said to follow the recommendations of the RCI,” he said.

“However, the RCI did not say that Tun Dr Mahathir (Mohamad) was guilty, not at all,” he added.

Takiyuddin had filed the motion to cite Anwar to the committee on July 24.

The Kota Baru MP claimed that Anwar, who is also the Tambun MP had stated that Dr Mahathir was guilty of a serious offense, even though he has not been charged, tried, or convicted by any court regarding the allegations.

He had also questioned whether a prime minister has the power to accuse or prosecute someone.
