KOTA KINABALU: A half-day cleanup programme around the city saw volunteers collecting over 59 tonnes of trash and over 140,000 plastic bottles for recycling.
KK Cleanup Day 2.0 on Saturday (Aug 23) saw some 2,000 volunteers cleaning the city area, islands and coastal villages.
These included Pulau Gaya and Pulau Sepanggar, Kampung Lok Urai, Kampung Kasuapan, Kampung Pondo and Kampung Torong Logong.
Mayor Datuk Seri Sabin Samitah said the volunteers comprised representatives from government departments and agencies, NGOs, local communities and students.
“They cleaned drains, floors and buildings, painted rubbish collection centres, pruned trees, did pest control, and collected floating garbage at sea,” he said.
The event, held in conjunction with National Month, proved that the civic-mindedness of the people was improving along with their willingness to come together for gotong-royong (group cooperation) events, he added.
“Through programmes like this, we not only help clean and beautify the area but also instil a greater sense of love and appreciation for our city.
“Relations between the community and government agencies and departments are also strengthened through activities like this,” Sabin added.
KK Cleanup Day 2.0 also saw the launch of the island edition of the My Clean Village challenge, which encourages local coastal communities to clean and beautify their homes.
