Police nab three men for suspected cable theft in Cheras

KUALA LUMPUR: Police arrested three local men suspected of cable theft and attempting to obstruct public servants from carrying out their duties at Jalan Cheras, here, on Saturday (Aug 23).

Cheras police chief ACP Aidil Bolhassan said the three suspects, aged between 30 and 40, were travelling in a four-wheel-drive and tried to flee from a police inspection, ramming into several vehicles in the process.

"A footage of the incident has gone viral on social media since this morning. A search of the suspects' vehicle led to the discovery of four sacks filled with copper cables," he said in a statement on Sunday.

He said the suspects have been remanded for four days until Wednesday, and the case is being investigated under Section 379 of the Penal Code for suspected cable theft and Section 186 of the same code for obstructing public servants from carrying out their duties.

Meanwhile, the owners of the vehicles damaged during the incident lodged police reports on the same day, with the case classified under Section 42(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987.

"No injuries were reported among the drivers involved in the incident," he added.

Those with information on the case can contact the Cheras Police Hotline at 03-9284 5050/5051, the Kuala Lumpur Police Hotline at 03-2115 9999, or the nearest police station. - Bernama
