PETALING JAYA: A man, who masqueraded online as a pathologist involved in the post-mortem of Zara Qairina Mahathir, is being investigated by the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC).
In a statement yesterday, the commission said the suspect was brought to the Dang Wangi police headquarters here to have his statement recorded.
“The Health Ministry has confirmed that the suspect is not a pathologist,” it added.
The MCMC emphasised that the spread of fake news – particularly those involving sensitive issues – is a serious offence that can confuse the public, disrupt investigations and cause grief to family members.
Bukit Aman Criminal Investigations Department director Comm Datuk M. Kumar said a 51-year-old man was arrested after posting a TikTok video alleging that Zara’s death was a planned murder.
“Police investigations into the two-minute, six-second video found it contained false claims,” he said.
The suspect was detained Monday night and remanded until tomorrow.
He said the suspect was detained at around 10.20pm on Monday and remanded until tomorrow.
Comm Kumar said police would not compromise with those found to be manipulating facts to spread fear, disrupt court proceedings or mislead the public.
