KUALA LUMPUR: A government backbencher from Sabah got emotional when debating the Home Minister’s address on the death of Zara Qairina Mahathir on Monday (aug 18).
“Rest well, dear Zara, in the hands of the Almighty. The world may not be a safe place for you, but heaven will welcome you with open arms,” said Datuk Matbali Musah (GRS-Sipitang), who choked up while winding up his debates in the Dewan Rakyat.
During debates, he said the “Justice for Zara” wave is not just an outburst of emotion but the instinct of being frustrated if the perpetrators are not brought to justice.
“We must not drag our legs on this. We must collectively urge for a swift outcome so that Zara's mother's tears will not be in vain,” he said.
He supported the Home Ministry’s efforts in the case, urging for investigations to continue transparently and boldly.
“Justice for Zara is not for her family but is instead our responsibility to ensure a better future,” he said.
Datuk Seri Bung Mokhtar Radin (BN-Kinabatangan), who interjected during the debates, meanwhile urged for immediate action to be taken against school authorities that attempt to cover up bullying cases.
“Elements of bullying were confirmed. Bullying in schools is widespread. Any schools that cover up bullying cases for the sake of the school’s reputation must have action taken against them.
“This includes the teachers. The minister also cannot cover up these instances,” he said, with Matbali agreeing to this.
Zara Qairina, 13, was found unconscious in a drain at 4am on July 16 near her school hostel in Papar, Sabah.
She was later pronounced dead at Queen Elizabeth I Hospital on July 17.
Her death led to public outcry, with multiple gatherings held to demand justice.
Meanwhile, an inquest ordered by the Attorney-General’s Chambers has been scheduled to begin Sept 3.
