Lorry driver dies after tanker explodes while being welded at Rantau workshop

SEREMBAN: A truck driver died while a workshop assistant suffered minor injuries after a tanker truck exploded during a valve welding process at a workshop in Batu 6, Kuala Sawah, Rantau, here Saturday (Aug 16).

Senior Assistant Fire Supt I Mohd Syazwan Saidy said his team received an emergency call at 1:23pm and found the 33-year-old victim unconscious.

He said the tanker truck had been at the workshop since Friday (Aug 15) afternoon, brought from Jalan Pantai, Seremban, for repairs.

"According to a witness, both victims were on top of the tanker truck to perform welding work when it suddenly exploded, causing both of them to be thrown into the air, believed to be as high as 3m.

"The witness then saw the victim in an unconscious state after suffering serious head injuries before helping to carry the workshop assistant, who is also the victim's brother, into a room while waiting for help to arrive," he said in a statement here Saturday.

Mohd Syazwan said the Seremban 2 Fire and Rescue Station's Hazmat Special Team then conducted a "detection" of the workshop area and the site of the explosion and found that the environmental readings had returned to normal.

He said the victim was later sent to the Rembau Hospital for an autopsy, while the workshop assistant was sent to the Tuanku Ja'afar Hospital in Seremban for further treatment. The case has been handed over to the police for further investigation. - Bernama
