Vapers shocked to find products online

PETALING JAYA: When G. Michael, 34, first learned about the ban on online vape sales last year, he resorted to going to physical stores again to purchase the product.

Earlier this year, however, he made a search online and the results took him by surprise.

“The websites selling these products were everywhere. There were so many options, but most were from retailers I had not heard of before.

“My regular shop, however, did not show any results or products on display.

“It was quite shocking. I thought there was a ban, but vape products were sold openly and easily found too,” said the executive.

The situation also came as a shock to Mohd Haziq, 28, who saw his colleague buying vape products over the phone.

“I asked him – isn’t this supposed to be banned? My colleague said that as long as it is available online, it is more convenient to purchase,” said the writer.

Regulations under the Control of Smoking Products for Public Health Act (Act 852) prohibit the online sale of vapes and e-liquids.

The prohibition, which fell under the first phase of enforcement in Act 852, came into effect in October 2024.

Yet, a few clicks on search engines can easily lead to dozens of online vape stores, many with slick designs and colourful product displays.

Prices vary according to the products offered, and begin as low as RM22.

Most sites feature only a basic age-verification pop-up, asking visitors to declare if they are over 18 before browsing.

Selecting “yes” instantly unlocks the full catalogue, with no further checks.

If one selects “no”, they will be directed out of the website.

The purchasing process is as seamless as any other e-commerce site.

Users only have to add the product to their virtual card, fill in their contact and delivery address details, and choose their payment method.
