OSAKA: Tengku Datuk Seri Zafrul Abdul Aziz is now officially a PKR member.

The Investment, Trade and Industry Minister confirmed that the party had accepted his membership application.

He is now a member of the Ampang PKR division.

“I can confirm that I have applied (to join) the party and I have informed the secretary-general on the matter,” he said when met by the Malaysian media at the Malaysia Pavilion in World Expo 2025.

Asked if his membership application had been accepted, Tengku Zafrul answered in the affirmative.

“Yes,” he said, adding that his membership was approved following the party's leadership council meeting about two weeks ago.

In May, Tengku Zafrul submitted his resignation letter as an Umno supreme council member, Kota Raja division chief and as a party member.

He then said that he would begin the application process of being a PKR member and had expressed the intention to the PKR president.

Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim is PKR president.

Tengku Zafrul’s departure from Umno comes just days after two PKR stalwarts – Datuk Seri Rafizi Ramli and Nik Nazmi Nik Ahmad – had resigned as Economy Minister and Natural Resources and Environmental Sustainability Minister, respectively.

Rafizi had lost his deputy presidency in the PKR party elections, while Nik Nazmi lost his position as vice-president.

Tengku Zafrul had quit as Selangor Umno treasurer in April last year, and speculation has been rife since late last year that he would leave the party to join PKR.
