KOTA KINABALU: Sabah's state-level Malaysia Day celebration this year will involve more youths to instil a stronger sense of patriotism and understanding of the nation’s formative history, says Datuk Jafry Ariffin.
The state Tourism, Culture and Environment Minister said it is important to involve and include youths in such celebrations to preserve unity, promote understanding and protect the peace the nation has enjoyed for so long.
"Youths must not be sidelined, because they are the future generation and will be the drivers of the country's direction," he told a press conference here on Monday (Sept 14) evening.
Jafry, the celebrations' organising committee chairman, stressed that this is not just a public holiday but a day for everyone to truly understand and appreciate its meaning.
He said this year's celebration will see some 300 students from higher learning institutes attending, with an estimated 3,000 people expected to come and enjoy the programmes lined up.
Arrival of the public is scheduled from 6pm on Wednesday (Sept 16), with invited guests such as federal and state department heads and state leaders from 7pm.
The guest of honor, Yang di-Pertua Negeri Tun Musa Aman and his wife Toh Puan Faridah Tussin, will arrive at 8.10pm.
The celebration will begin with the national and state anthems followed by a welcoming dance, Jafry’s welcoming address, the Chief Minister’s speech, Malaysia Day cake cutting, and special performances carrying a message of shared prosperity.
This year's national-level Malaysia Day celebration is being held in Kuching, Sarawak.
