KUALA LUMPUR: The family of a key witness in Lim Guan Eng's graft trial has expressed fear after a brutal attack and robbery that took place at their home on Wednesday (Aug 6).
Datuk G Geethajali, who is the wife of G Gnanaraja, said she believed the attack was "not an ordinary robbery" due to the suspicious circumstances in the incident.
“There were many things that happened, but I cannot disclose them here as it may compromise the ongoing investigation.
“What I can say is that there were several unusual things the assailants did, which clearly suggest that their intention was not simply to rob.
“The way they acted, it was not like how a typical robbery would unfold. If someone comes to steal, they take the valuables and leave, right?
“But in this case, they did other things that raised a lot of questions,” she said at a press conference held at the Kuala Lumpur Courts Complex here on Thursday.
On Wednesday, Petaling Jaya OCPD Asst Comm Shahrulnizam Ja’afar confirmed that a group of masked and armed men had broken into the victim's home in Jalan Bukit Gasing here and stole valuables that were kept in a safe.
Gnanaraja, who is a key prosecution witness in Lim's trial, sustained various injuries to his face and hands.
Geethajali told the press that her statement has been recorded by the authorities on Thursday.
“My husband was threatened and assaulted, slapped and slashed with a machete during the incident.
"We are living in fear...What happened was terrifying as I witnessed it with my own eyes.
“I saw everything they did under the guise of a so-called robbery. There were too many unusual things that strongly suggest this was no ordinary break-in,” she said.
Geethajali appealed for the authorities to ensure protection for her family’s safety.
Gnanaraja, who had a white bandage on his hand, was also present at the press conference.
The couple did not take questions from the press and left the court complex with their bodyguards.
