Perak Sultan's office lodges report over TikTok video making false claims

IPOH: The Perak Sultan's office has lodged a police report over a TikTok video claiming that a royal wedding ceremony will be held at Istana Iskandariah in Kuala Kangsar.

Comptroller of the Perak Royal Household Meor Hezbullah Meor Abd Malik said the report was lodged on Thursday (July 31) to protect the good name of the Sultan, the Royal Institution, and the palace from being besmirched.

"The Perak Sultan's office would like to stress that the content from the TikTok account is fake and is concerned that it may confuse the public.

"We do not know and do not have any ties with the account owner, nor (has the office) appointed any social media account owners as its spokesperson for any ceremonies related to the palace," he said in a statement on Monday (Aug 4).

Meor Hezbullah said the 58-second video that was uploaded by a user calling themselves "The King" was accompanied by a caption claiming that the ceremony from Aug 7 to 17 would also be shown live on Astro.

"It also mentioned that RM800 would be given to the people in Perak and Sabah every month for a year," he said.

"We would like to stress again that there is no live airing of any royal wedding ceremony to the public or any ceremonies to be held at the palace.

"Such an irresponsible act of spreading false information needs to stop to prevent confusion or misunderstanding among the people," he added.

In a statement on Friday (Aug 1), Ipoh OCPD Asst Comm Abang Zainal Abidin Abang Ahmad said police came across a video containing allegedly defamatory and false claims involving Perak Raja Di-Hilir Raja Iskandar Dzurkanain Sultan Idris Shah.

The case is being investigated under Section 500 of the Penal Code for defamation and Section 233 of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998 for improper use of network facilities.
