Ipoh cops issue warning over fake news of cash handouts at 'coronation ceremony'

IPOH: Claims that cash will be given out in conjunction with a coronation ceremony in Perak are untrue, says Ipoh OCPD Asst Comm Abang Zainal Abidin Abang Ahmad.

He said police had come across a video on social media containing false and defamatory content that tarnishes the good name of the Raja Di-Hilir of Perak.

"The video was posted by a TikTok user under the name 'The King Xtra The Star'.

"Preliminary investigations found that no coronation ceremony will be held at any palace in the state nor will a RM800 incentive be paid out to residents as alleged in the video," he said in a statement on Thursday (July 31).

"We received a report from a 43-year-old man at 9.20pm on Thursday (July 24) regarding the post.

ACP Abang Zainal Abidin said the case would be investigated under Section 500 of the Penal Code for defamation and Section 233 of the Communications and Multimedia Act for misuse of network facilities.

On Thursday, Star Media Group Berhad, which publishes The Star print products and online portal, lodged a police report against the TikTok account for impersonating The Star.
