KUALA LUMPUR: Strong cooperation between the media and the police is essential to safeguard national security and public well-being, says Datuk Seri Mohd Khalid Ismail.
The Inspector-General of Police said the media serves as a vital bridge between law enforcement and the public, helping to foster mutual understanding, transparency and national cohesion.
"The responsibilities of the media extend beyond mere reporting. The media is a key partner in promoting harmony and collective responsibility in defending the nation's peace and security," he said in his speech during a gathering with the media in Bukit Aman on Friday (Aug 1).
The IGP said the police, as the enforcement agency closest to the people, often face criticism while carrying out their duties.
"Since assuming this role, I have authorised not only myself but also the Deputy IGP, the Police secretary, the Bukit Aman corporate communications head, department directors, state police chiefs and district police chiefs to hold press conferences on their achievements to ensure accurate, verified and up-to-date information reaches the public," he said.
He also reminded the media to verify all reports and photographs with Bukit Aman before publishing.
"This is not meant to restrict press freedom but to uphold a sense of responsibility in protecting the nation's security," he added.
Mohd Khalid warned that inaccurate reporting could tarnish the image, credibility and authority of national leaders and institutions, including the monarchy.
"The media should also avoid publishing reports that could pit the police against other government agencies," he said.
He urged the press to prioritise national unity and peace, particularly by steering clear of sensationalising issues related to race, religion and royalty (3R) issues.
Among those who attended the event were Star Media Group Berhad's chief news editor Mazwin Nik Anis and news editor Farik Zolkepli.
