Malaysians in Japan urged to stay alert following tsunami warning

PETALING JAYA: The Foreign Affairs Ministry has called on Malaysians in Japan to remain vigilant following a tsunami advisory issued after a powerful offshore earthquake near Russia’s Kamchatka Peninsula early Wednesday morning.

The 8.7-magnitude quake triggered tsunami warnings for Japan’s Pacific coastal regions, with waves of up to 3m expected to reach areas including eastern Hokkaido, the Boso Peninsula, the Ogasawara Islands, and parts of Shizuoka, the Kii Peninsula and Miyazaki Prefecture.

“The Foreign Affairs Ministry, through the Embassy of Malaysia in Tokyo, is closely monitoring the situation following the tsunami advisory issued by the Japan Meteorological Agency on July 30, 2025," it said on Wednesday (July 30).

"At present, there are no reports of Malaysians affected by the incident. However, Wisma Putra advised all Malaysians in the affected areas to prioritise their safety.

“All Malaysians in the affected areas are strongly advised to remain vigilant, adhere to all safety instructions issued by local authorities, and stay informed through official channels.

Malaysians living in or travelling through the impacted regions are also urged to register with the Malaysian Embassy in Tokyo and maintain contact to ensure timely consular assistance if needed.

For assistance, the Embassy of Malaysia in Tokyo can be reached via phone at +81-3-3476-3840 and +81-80-4322-3366 or email at mwtokyo@kln.gov.my and consular.tyo@kln.gov.my.
