SHAH ALAM: Comm Datuk Shazeli Kahar has officially assumed the role of Selangor police chief, with a focus on the safety and wellbeing of the people in Selangor.
"My primary commitment in this role is to ensure that both security and public welfare remain steadfastly protected.
"My team and I will cooperate with other relevant parties such as the state government, to ensure that the well‑being and safety of communities across Selangor are always maintained," he told reporters after the handing over and rank conferment ceremony on Wednesday (July 30).
Comm Shazeli takes over from Comm Datuk Hussein Omar Khan, who was recently appointed as the Bukit Aman Narcotics Crime Investigation Department (NCID) director.
However, the handing ceremony was between Selangor deputy police chief Deputy Comm Mohd Zaini Abu Hassan and Comm Shazeli and witnessed by Bukit Aman Logistics and Technology Department director Comm Gilbert Philip Layang.
Comm Shazeli, who was previously the commandant of the Police College, said the posting marks his first assignment in Selangor.
"One of the key focuses for me is to strengthen ties with local communities and bolster public confidence in the police force.
"We will work to enhance the public’s positive perception of the police force.
"This perception is closely linked to many issues that we must manage, and from there we will plan our next steps accordingly," he added.
On challenges helming Selangor police, especially crime rates and the state's high population density, Comm Shazeli said strategic approaches would be formulated in consultation with his officers.
"These matters will be discussed with my officers in the near future. I will also liaise closely with the state government, as security cannot be handled in isolation,” he said.
He also expressed confidence that the state government shares the same goal of preserving the welfare of its citizens.
"I believe the state government is equally committed to working hand in hand with the PDRM to ensure that the people live in peace and harmony," he said.
