Assistant chief medical officer arrested over contract misuse

An assistant chief medical officer has been arrested for allegedly awarding contracts worth RM20,000 to his wife's company between 2023 and 2024.

The suspect is in his 50s and will be remanded for four days until Monday (July 28) for investigations into the alleged abuse of power.

A Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) source said the suspect was arrested at the Labuan MACC office while giving his statement at around 5.40 p.m. on Wednesday (July 23).

"He is believed to have abused his position by securing forwarding or logistics management contracts for his wife's company between 2023 and 2024," said the source.

Labuan MACC director Muhammat Azis Malmod confirmed the arrest and said the case is being investigated under Section 23 of the MACC Act 2009 for using office or position for gratification.

Meanwhile, in Sandakan, two more Municipal Council officials were arrested as part of ongoing bribery investigations totalling RM200,000.

The two individuals—a 34-year-old woman and a 28-year-old man—are the latest to be detained following the earlier arrest of five others in connection with the case.

The duo will be remanded for four days starting Thursday (July 24). Both were arrested around 7 p.m. on Wednesday (July 23) after giving statements at the Sandakan MACC office.

On Wednesday, five individuals, including an engineer, an assistant engineer, and a former council employee aged between 30 and 50, were arrested in connection with this case.

They are suspected of receiving bribes as a reward for obtaining council contract tenders since 2022.
