George Town's Jln Masjid Negeri reopens after diesel spill

GEORGE TOWN: An oil spill from a lorry transporting diesel triggered a massive traffic jam along Jalan Masjid Negeri on Tuesday (July 22) afternoon, but the road has since been cleared and reopened to traffic.

Batu Lanchang assemblyman Ong Ah Teong said the incident occurred at around 3pm when the lorry exited a petrol station and spilled oil while making a turn onto the road near the Lam Wah Ee Hospital.

"The oil spill caused around 20 motorcycles to skid out of control," he said.

Ong said the Fire and Rescue Department was at the scene from 3.30pm to clean up the spill.

He said the incident resulted in a traffic snarl stretching more than 3km.

The Penang Fire and Rescue Department confirmed the incident and said its personnel had cleared the diesel from the road.

As of 6pm, the department confirmed that the road has been reopened to traffic.
