SIBU: An elderly man died while another was injured after the four-wheel drive (4WD) vehicle they were in skidded and plunged into a ravine.

A spokesperson from the Sarawak Fire and Rescue Department operations centre said the victim, identified as Berain Sinau, 81, died after the 4WD plunged into the 10m-deep ravine.

The incident occurred at KM 38.6 of Jalan Musah/Kajah, Song, in Kapit on Sunday night.

Another passenger Basir Dingun, 43, suffered injuries and was sent to the Kanowit hospital by passers-by.

The spokesman said the driver, aged 50, and two other passengers, aged 61 and 44, escaped unhurt, Bernama reported.

He said after receiving a distress call at 7.50pm, they deployed a team from the Song fire station to the location with the assistance of the Song police.

“A bulldozer from a nearby logging company was used to clear the path and tow the vehicle to a safer location,” the spokesman added.
