Do not speculate on judicial appointments, says Selangor Ruler


PETALING JAYA: Selangor Ruler Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah has said that all parties should not speculate on the matter of judicial appointments.

“Everyone is urged to avoid making any speculation and negative accusations without obtaining complete and verified facts about any matter,” said Sultan Sharafuddin, who chaired the 269th meeting of the Conference of Rulers at Istana Negara

He added that he fully supports the Istana Negara statement on judicial appointments.

“I fully support the statement which states that His Majesty the Yang di-Pertuan Agong can appoint the Chief Justice, the President of the Court of Appeal, and other key judicial positions upon the advice of the Prime Minister and after consulting the Conference of Rulers,” said Sultan Sharafuddin.

Sultan Sharafuddin added that this process as provided under the Federal Constitution, must be carried out transparently and cautiously to uphold the sovereignty of the law and support the principles of justice.

“This constitutional process must be carried out transparently and with great care to uphold the rule of law and the principles of justice, which are fundamental to the governance of the nation," added Sultan Sharafuddin

In a Facebook post by the Selangor Royal Office on Thursday (July 17), His Royal Highness said that the Pre-Council Meeting of the Conference of Rulers was held on Tuesday (July 15) followed by the 269th Meeting of the Conference of Rulers on Wednesday (July 16). 

“One of the main agenda items discussed was the consultation process for the appointment of the Chief Justice, President of the Court of Appeal, Chief Judges of Sabah and Sarawak, as well as other senior judges of the superior courts.

“During the discussions, I stressed the importance of strictly adhering to all legal provisions, especially Article 122B of the Federal Constitution, which outlines the process and procedures for appointing senior judges,” said Sultan Sharafuddin.
