Economic growth in Johor better than Selangor's, says Dr Wee

PETALING JAYA: Economic growth, formal sector wages and median household income in Johor is better than other states, including Selangor, says Datuk Seri Dr Wee Ka Siong.

The MCA president said Johor even outpaced Selangor on several key economic indicators and voters should take note of this.

He said PKR Selangor election director Dr Sathia Prakash Nadarajan recently accused Johor Mentri Besar Datuk Onn Hafiz Ghazi of targeting DAP because Barisan Nasional was "out of ideas".

Dr Wee said Onn Hafiz was only making Johor Barisan's stand clear – that it would not cooperate with DAP in the 2026 Johor Election.

"Dr Sathia said the people of Johor are mature and can assess leaders based on performance. I agree. So let us compare the performance of the Johor Barisan government with the Selangor government since Barisan won the Johor elections in 2022," said Dr Wee in a social media post on Friday (June 12).

He said the comparison should cover economic growth, investment, job creation, formal sector wages and household income and not based on rhetoric alone.

Citing official figures, Dr Wee said Johor's gross domestic product (GDP) grew 6.4% in 2025, compared with about 5% to 5.5% for Selangor, while the national average was 5.2%.

"In terms of approved investments in 2025, Johor received RM110bil, while Selangor received RM83.9bil. Johor was ahead by RM26.1bil," he said.

On employment, he said Johor created 352,200 new jobs between the first quarter of 2022 and the first quarter of 2026, representing growth of 19.8%. Selangor created 456,400 jobs over the same period, but its growth rate was 12.7%.

He noted that Selangor has a population of some 7.5 million, almost double Johor's 4.2 million.

"Based on population, Johor created 83.9 new jobs for every 1,000 residents. Selangor created only 62.5 new jobs for every 1,000 residents," he said.

Dr Wee also highlighted wage growth in the formal sector between February 2022 and December 2025.

"Johor recorded a 42.7% increase, compared with 33% for Malaysia as a whole and 25.9% for Selangor," he said.

For median household income growth from 2022 to 2025, Johor rose 12.1%, the national average was 10.7%, while Selangor recorded 7.4%, he added.

"Taken together, the picture is very clear. Johor is not only growing faster than Selangor, it is also ahead of the national average in economic growth, formal sector wages and median household income," he said.

He acknowledged that Selangor remains larger in terms of total economic size and income levels but said growth momentum is now in Johor's favour.

"This is not perception, not rhetoric. These are raw data," he said, urging Johor voters to take Dr Sathia's own advice and judge governments by performance.

Dr Sathia had earlier said Johoreans were more concerned about issues such as the cost of living, jobs, wages, education, healthcare and the state's economy and were mature enough to judge leaders based on performance rather than "old rhetoric rooted in fear and division".
