Push to protect 'Tambun pomelo' brand through IP registration

IPOH: Efforts are underway to register the popular Tambun pomelo as an intellectual property (IP) under geographical indications.

Gopeng MP Tan Kar Hing said several places in the country are already cultivating the fruit and could use the name "Tambun pomelo", which has been grown in Tambun since the 1940s.

"The Tambun pomelo is already a brand, and we need to protect its name and image.

"We are urging growers from Tambun, Ampang, and Ulu Piah to establish a non-governmental organisation so that we can push for IP registration," he said after attending a pomelo growers' empowerment programme at Kampung Baru Ampang here on Sunday (June 29).

"For so long, growers have invested significant funds and effort into developing the industry. An IP would also ensure that the fruit gains added value," he added.

Tan said he would work with the growers and the state Agriculture Department to discuss the necessary details to streamline the criteria required for the product to be officially recognised as Tambun pomelo.

These criteria, he said, include the type of soil needed, weather conditions, taste, size, sweetness level, and colour of the fruit.

"The product is ready, and the quality of the fruits is assured. The pomelo industry here has already matured, and it is high time to take the next step," he said, adding that he is hopeful the registration can be completed within six months.
