Haemodialysis centre staff in the dock for cheating

SIBU: A haemodialysis centre employee pleaded not guilty at the Magistrate Court here to a charge of deceiving an MP in relation to a RM5,000 donation intended for kidney patients.

The 37-year-old accused claimed trial after the charge was read before Magistrate Oon Kork Chern on Wednesday (June 25).

The court subsequently granted the accused bail of RM3,500 with two sureties.

The accused was also instructed to report to the investigating officer Insp Mohd Yazid Robin on a monthly basis beginning July 1 until the case is concluded.

Additionally, the accused is prohibited from contacting or approaching any individual who may be called as a prosecution witness.

The court fixed July 21 for case management.

According to the charge sheet, the accused is alleged to have deceived Lanang MP Alice Lau into handing over RM5,000 in cash, purportedly as a donation for haemodialysis patients.

The offence is said to have taken place at Lau's service Centre on Jan 2 this year.

The accused is charged under Section 420 of the Penal Code for cheating, which provides for a jail term ranging from one to 10 years, whipping and a fine, upon conviction.
