Man remanded for suspected murder and arson

TANGKAK: An unemployed man suspected of fatally slashing his wife at their home in Bukit Gambir on Monday (June 2) has been remanded for seven days to assist with the investigation.

Magistrate Lee Kim Keat issued the remand order for the 33-year-old suspect following an application by the investigating officer from the Tangkak District Police Headquarters.

The suspect will be held from Wednesday (June 4) until next Tuesday to complete the investigation, classified under Section 302 of the Penal Code for murder and Section 435 for committing mischief by fire.

Earlier, the suspect, wearing a purple lock-up shirt, appeared calm when he arrived at the court compound at about 8.30am under tight police security.

However, he suddenly screamed, chanting loudly while in the court lock-up.

The remand application took about 20 minutes before the suspect was taken back in a police truck for further investigation.

The man allegedly slashed his wife at their residence in Bukit Gambir.

Following the incident, the suspect reportedly attempted to set fire to his mother-in-law's house in Lenga, Pagoh, about 40 kilometres from the scene.

His attempt was unsuccessful, and he only managed to burn several vehicles outside the house.

According to sources, swift police action led to the suspect's arrest at the location.
