Suspected petrol smuggler arrested in Kota Baru

KOTA BARU: The Domestic Trade and Cost of Living Ministry has detained a man on suspicion of misappropriating and smuggling subsidised petrol here.

The arrest was made at 12.55pm on Tuesday (May 27) at a petrol station in Jalan Sultanah Zainab, the ministry's Kelantan director Azman Ismail said.

He added that the 36-year-old suspect was taken during an operation to prevent leakage of controlled items at the station.

He said in a statement on Wednesday (May 28) that an inspection of the man's car found that it had been modified with additional fuel tanks in the boot and on the undercarriage.

The authorities believe the car was used to smuggle petrol into a neighbouring country.

"The team also seized the vehicle, about 150 litres of petrol, several petrol purchase invoices dated May 27, and ownership documents.

"The case is being investigated under the Control of Supplies Act 1961.

"(We are also investigating) the petrol station owner to determine if there is any form of complicity,” he said. – Bernama
