Local political struggle needs sincerity and unity, says Bung Moktar

KOTA KINABALU: Calls for a local political struggle must be backed by sincerity, unity, and strategic maturity, not just catchy slogans or personal ambition.

Sabah Umno chief Datuk Seri Bung Moktar Radin said pride in Sabah, the pursuit of autonomy, and the defence of native rights are noble sentiments and added that all of this should translate into genuine, tangible actions and not just emotional rhetoric.

"I acknowledge and appreciate the local political spirit that has long been the heartbeat of Sabah’s political discourse," he said on Wednesday (May 28).

He said that the desire for self-determination and the intent to defend people's rights are noble instincts deserving recognition.

However, Bung Moktar added that spirit alone is not enough without political integrity, strategic maturity, and unity in action.

"We cannot continue to use the 'local spirit' as a political slogan without delivering real results for the people," he said.

Bung Moktar criticised Sabah STAR president Datuk Seri Dr Jeffrey Kitingan for repeating an outdated narrative that only local parties can defend Sabah’s interests.

"As of September 30, 2024, the Election Commission listed 19 registered local parties in Sabah.

If he is truly sincere in championing the local voice, why has he failed to unite these 19 parties under one banner,” said Bung Moktar.

He pointed out that Kitingan joined Umno in 2003 before moving to PKR in 2006.

"The reality is, his 'local party' rhetoric is merely a mask for his personal political survival. This agenda is not about the people; it is about clinging to influence within a small circle," Bung Moktar said.

He said that Sabah Umno would not be swayed by emotional political tactics and added that Sabah’s future lies in engaging with a strong national structure.

"We believe Sabah’s strength does not lie in isolation, but in forming strategic alliances within the national framework,” said Bung Moktar.

"Only through a well-structured national coalition like Barisan Nasional can we bring meaningful development and safeguard state rights," he added.

Bung Moktar added that there is no point in shouting "local party" slogans without unifying voices, maintaining stability, or protecting the people.

"These questions must be answered with a proven track record, and that is where the difference between us lies. Sabah Umno remains steadfast in its struggle for the people,” he said.

"We do not promise the moon and stars, but we bring experience, stability, and the genuine capacity to govern," added Bung Moktar.
