KUALA LUMPUR: Asean, the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) and China have laid the political foundation for stronger economic collaboration, but it is now up to the business community to act, says Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim.
With that in mind, the Prime Minister urged industry players to seize the opportunity created by clear policies and firm political commitment.
“We have done our part,” Anwar said at the Gala Dinner and opening ceremony of the Asean-Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC)-China Economic Forum 20 here on Tuesday (May 27).
“The political leadership has assured you of stability, has given attractive policies and provided clarity that promotes new technologies and investment. The ball is now in your hands.”
He stressed that with policy direction in place, industry players must take the lead in turning commitments into tangible results, as leaders and citizens alike are eager to see real progress.
Anwar’s remarks came after what he described as a “highly successful” series of meetings among regional leaders in Kuala Lumpur.

He said even contentious issues were resolved through consensus, showcasing Asean’s strength and independence.
“We decided that what is important is a cohesive, strong and fiercely independent Asean that confirms our centrality and acts to protect our interests,” he said, adding that collaboration with the GCC and China is a strategic move to promote economic resilience and regional stability.
Anwar lauded the GCC’s efforts in embracing digitalisation, artificial intelligence and renewable technologies, calling the group the “dynamo of the Middle East” for its resilience and bold economic transformation.
“I salute those from the GCC who have chosen to join us in this courageous venture,” he said.
On China’s role, Anwar said Beijing remained a critical partner due to its proximity, commitment to regional peace and proven capacity for technological and economic advancement.
“China has shown a willingness to promote peace and justice, and to focus on what truly matters to humanity - fairness and development for all,” he said.
He also expressed pride in the ability of Asean, the GCC and China to issue a joint statement outlining shared commitments to good governance, economic transparency and the protection of citizens’ rights and welfare.
“This proves it can be done,” he said, thanking Foreign Minister Datuk Seri Mohamad Hasan and the Malaysian delegation for their behind-the-scenes efforts in making the Asean Summit a success.
