Asean's measured approach to US tariffs opens doors for engagement with major economies, says Tengku Zafrul

KUALA LUMPUR: Asean’s stance of not imposing retaliatory measures in response to the United States’ tariffs has averted further escalation on the matter and it has set the foundation for engagement with other major economies, says Tengku Datuk Seri Zafrul Abdul Aziz (pic).

The Investment, Trade and Industry Minister said he was proud that Asean’s response to the United States has been measured.

“Instead of retaliation, we have chosen dialogue and cooperation with a clear commitment among Asean member states not to impose retaliatory measures, emphasising that open communication is key to a balanced and sustainable relationship.

“This prudent stance has already averted escalation and preserved the foundation for engagement between Asean, not just with the United States, but with other major economies as well,” said Tengku Zafrul.

He was speaking in his opening remarks at the 25th Asean Economic Community Council (AECC) Meeting at Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre (KLCC) on Sunday (May 25).

Tengku Zafrul said Malaysia, as chair of Asean this year, will try its best in steering the right conversation at the right time with the right partner economies for the remainder of the 2025.

“At the same time, we also need to look into ways to increase intra-Asean trade, so as to reduce our dependencies towards external partners,” he added.

Tengku Zafrul said the AECC meeting will discuss 11 agenda items on Sunday (May 25) and it is expected to take up half of the day.

“Let us be reminded of the values that bind us together as Asean - peace, stability, mutual respect and the determination to ensure a better future for all.

“Asean’s journey has never been without challenges, but time and again, we have proven resilient, pragmatic and forward-looking guided by these values,” added Tengku Zafrul.

Asean Ministerial Meetings are taking place on Sunday (May 25) and it is expected to set the tone for the 46th Asean Summit and Related Summits scheduled for May 26-27.

Leaders in the region will meet during the 46th Asean Summit on May 26 and the summits with the Gulf Cooperation Council and China on May 27.
