Dewan Rakyat sitting moved to July amid tariff trouble

PETALING JAYA: The Dewan Rakyat meeting scheduled in June will now take place in July to enable the government to decide on Malaysia’s economic growth projection, in light of the US reciprocal tariff imposed on our country.

“Such growth projection will also be part of the input for preparations for the 13th Malaysia Plan,” read a statement from the Speaker’s office yesterday.

The august House, originally scheduled to convene from June 23 to July 31 this year, will now have its proceedings from July 21 (Monday) to Aug 28 (Thursday).

The statement said that Dewan Rakyat Speaker Tan Sri Dr Johari Abdul was informed by the Leader of the House (Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim) of the changes to the dates, in line with Standing Order 11(2).

“This year is full of commitments for MPs, not only for Parliament matters involving the country, but also direct involvement with various regional meetings including the Asean Inter-Parliamentary Assembly,” the statement said.

It said this year will also see an increase in the total number of days that the Dewan Rakyat convened – from 69 days in 2024 to 78 this year.

“This shows the determination of the Malaysian Parliament in strengthening the process of parliamentary democracy.

“The House maintains its independence of any political inclinations and constantly upholds the interests of the people and nation as its utmost priority,” it said.
