Couples exchange vows at mass wedding in Ipoh


IPOH: Twelve couples exchanged vows during a mass wedding registration at the Ipoh Chin Woo Athletic Association.

Dressed in elegant white, blue, and black, the couples marked their union with floral bouquets and matching suits.

Among them was Cheng Kam Sin, 33, son of the famous Ipoh taugeh chicken rice restaurateur, who married Wong Kuh Mun, 27.

"We're six months into our relationship and decided to tie the knot on Tuesday (May 20) as the date is very meaningful," he said.

Cheng, a chef, recalled meeting Wong at a convenience store.

"It was love at first sight. She took about a week to respond to my messages and that’s how our love story began," he said with a smile.

Accountant Lai Hoong Lek, 29, and tax agent Wynnona Wee Ching Woon, 30, said this day marks eight years since they first met.

"It’s easier, one memorable date, fewer presents to worry about," joked Wee. "I’m glad we’ve cherished every milestone together," she added.

Ipoh Chin Woo Athletic Association president Datuk Ooi Foh Sing said many couples choose this day as the number is meaningful.

"The date May 20 (520) means 'I love you' in Mandarin," he said.

He added that it is important for couples to respect one another and their parents and family members.

The association has held many mass wedding registrations on special dates at its premises.
