ISKANDAR PUTERI: Tunku Ismail Sultan Ibrahim has told authorities to impose stricter punishment on those who continue to dump rubbish illegally.

He said that the state government and federal agencies must work together in addressing the issue and deterring the public from throwing their trash recklessly.

"I decree that the state government, together with the relevant authorities, sit together and come out with strict punishments for individuals or parties who continue to carelessly dispose of garbage into rivers or in any other location," he said.

The Johor Regent said he was disappointed to know that there are still people who are throwing rubbish into rivers.

“This should not have happened. This kind of behaviour burdens the government, who are forced to spend the people's money on cleanup efforts.

"These funds should have been used for development purposes," he said during the opening of the fourth term of the 15th State Legislative Assembly sitting on Friday (May 16).

The Johor Regent also reminded the tourism sector to always maintain cleanliness and avoid greedy behaviour that could disrupt the ecosystem of tourist sites.

"Johor is fortunate to possess a natural environment that is both beautiful and attractive, as well as historical heritage buildings with the potential to become tourist attractions for visitors from around the world.

"To ensure the success of the tourism industry, the state government must upgrade existing infrastructure and promote all tourism products more aggressively," he added.
