Murder accused flashes peace sign before hearing

BUTTERWORTH: A 70-year-old murder accused drew attention when he flashed a peace sign for the media while being escorted into the court here by two policemen.

Inside the courtroom, Yee Fatt Seong appeared calm and even took a nap as he waited for his case to be called.

He required assistance to stand and hear the charge against him when it was read in Mandarin by a court interpreter.

Yee acknowledged it before Sessions Court judge Nor Azah Kasran yesterday.

No plea was recorded from the accused, as murder cases are under the jurisdiction of the High Court.

According to the charge sheet, Yee was accused of murdering Loo Ah Teong, 63, between 2pm and 3.22pm on April 27 at a hut in Jalan Kolam in Cherok Tokun, Bukit Mertajam.

He was charged under Section 302 of the Penal Code for murder, which provides for the death penalty or between 30 and 40 years in jail with no fewer than 12 strokes of the cane upon conviction.

Deputy public prosecutor Nurameera Shahrul Azrin prosecuted while Yee was unrepresented.

During the proceedings, Nurameera told the court that the charge is non-bailable under the law.

The court set June 30 for case mention pending the chemist’s and post-mortem reports of the victim.

It was earlier reported that a man was killed at a hut in Cherok Tokun on April 27.

Police later arrested a suspect in front of a coffee shop in Machang Bubok at about 11pm on April 29.

Investigations revealed that during the incident, the victim had been chatting with five friends, including the suspect, at the hut.

The suspect then suddenly struck the victim with a stick from behind and stabbed him.
