Driver to be charged on May 7 over child's death in locked van


JOHOR BARU: A van driver is expected to be charged in court on Wednesday (May 7) in connection with the death of a five-year-old boy who was found unconscious in a school van outside his kindergarten.

Iskandar Puteri OCPD Asst Comm M. Kumarasan said the seven-day remand period for the 56-year-old driver ends on Wednesday.

“He is expected to be charged at the Batu Pahat Sessions Court then,” he said in a statement on Tuesday (May 6).

The case is being investigated under Section 31(1)(a) of the Child Act 2001 for neglect or omission to care for a child in a manner likely to cause physical injury.

It was learned that all cases in Johor Baru scheduled to see charges brought on Wednesday have been directed to take place in Batu Pahat.

It was reported that the boy was found unconscious in a school van outside the kindergarten in Taman Bukit Indah here on April 30.

He was believed to have been left behind after the driver dropped off other students at around 7.30am.

The child was found at noon and later pronounced dead at the hospital.

The suspect was arrested at 2.40pm on the same day in the Taman Bukit Indah area.
