KOTA KINABALU: Hundreds of families in Sook and Beaufort remain in shelters as Sabah authorities continue responding to floods that have affected more than 1,600 people.
As of noon on Monday (May 5), 1,632 people from 488 households are still housed at six temporary relief centres in the two districts, according to the Sabah State Disaster Management Committee.
Sook has the highest number with 1,268 victims spread across four centres, including Dewan Datuk Ellron Angin and Dewan Masyarakat Sook.
Beaufort recorded 364 evacuees at Selagon Permanent Evacuation Centre and Dewan Residensi PR1MA Woorford Estate.
The district also saw several villages still flooded as of Monday morning, including Kampung Batu 60, Kampung Binunuk, Kampung Balibata, Kampung Bakalau, Kampung Bingkul and Kampung Selinsing.
Floodwaters also impacted parts of Pekan Beaufort, causing several roads to be impassable to all vehicles, including Jalan Batu 60 and Jalan Kg Binunuk.
Schools namely SJK (C) Kung Ming and SMK St Paul were among those affected by rising water levels, although no injuries or casualties have been reported.
Flooding in Beaufort and Tenom was triggered by continuous heavy rain since May 1, causing Sungai Padas to swell above the danger level.
As of 11am on Monday, water levels remained above 9.5m but are slowly receding.
In Tenom, 16 villages were affected by overflowing Sungai Padas and Sungai Pegalan but all the evacuation centres were closed by Monday afternoon with residents allowed to return home.
SK Kallang Kanar remained partially inundated.
Authorities also extended assistance to bedridden victims in Tenom.
So far, no landslides, road collapses or emergency incidents have been reported.
The weather has since improved in most affected areas.
