Extra safety measures needed at Senawang traffic light junction, says Negri exco member

SEREMBAN: The Negri Sembilan Public Works Department (JKR) is urged to install additional safety measures at the traffic light junction on Persiaran Senawang 1 near here where four people have died in accidents in two months.

State local government development, housing and transport committee chairman J. Arul Kumar said his office had discussed with JKR the best approach to ensure road users slow down at the location.

"Among the suggestions were the installation of warning lights before the junction and additional signs to indicate it is an accident-prone area to warn road users to be more cautious," he told Bernama here on Monday (May 5).

Arul, who also chairs the state-level Road Safety Council, said while authorities can enhance safety measures at the location, road users must play their part by driving responsibly.

He said driving behaviour and driver attitude play a critical role, and compliance with traffic laws – especially stopping at red lights – is a must.

Arul said drivers found guilty of running red lights and causing accidents should face appropriate penalties.

Meanwhile, Paroi assemblyman Kamarul Ridzuan Md Zain suggested that authorities paint yellow lines or install road studs at the location to reduce the likelihood of accidents.

On Saturday (May 3), a 20-year-old motorcyclist was killed when he was hit by a van that allegedly failed to stop at the traffic light junction.

A similar incident occurred at the same location in March when three motorcyclists were killed after being hit by a car that also ran a red light. – Bernama
