Umno backs renaming MRSM Kepala Batas to honour Abdullah Badawi

KUALA LUMPUR: The Umno Supreme Council has expressed full support for rebranding MRSM Kepala Batas as MRSM Tun Abdullah Ahmad Badawi, in recognition of the late former Prime Minister’s contributions to national development.

Umno secretary-general and Majlis Amanah Rakyat chairman Datuk Dr Asyraf Wajdi Dusuki said the decision was made during the party’s Supreme Council meeting on Wednesday (April 30).

He said the renaming is part of the party’s recognition of Tun Abdullah’s legacy as the "Father of Human Capital Development".

"The official declaration will be made on May 12 by Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Rural and Regional Development, Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi, who is also responsible for Mara," he said on Wednesday (April 30).

In the same meeting, Umno also expressed gratitude to voters in Ayer Kuning for their strong support during the recent by-election, which saw Barisan Nasional win with a commanding majority in all but one voting district.

"We thank all component parties in Barisan, Friends of BN, and our partners in Pakatan Harapan for their tireless work in ensuring the success of our candidate," Asyraf said.

He added that the result demonstrated increased support from Malay voters, multiracial communities, and especially the youth, indicating a clear rejection of divisive politics.

"The people have rejected racial rhetoric, hatred, slander and fear-mongering tactics that attempt to paint Islam and the Malays as being under threat," he said.

According to Asyraf, Umno will also hold its first-ever Patriotic School Convocation in conjunction with the party’s 79th anniversary celebrations on May 11 at Dewan Tun Hussein Onn, World Trade Centre, here.
