Fisherman drowns after falling into river in Tangkak

TANGKAK: A 38-year-old man tragically drowned after falling into Sungai Ring while fishing alone in the wee hours.

Tangkak OCPD Supt Roslan Mohd Talib said a 71-year-old man informed them that his foster son had not returned home after going fishing shortly after midnight on Monday.

According to the report, the victim usually returned home around 6.30am, but by 8:00am, he still had not shown up.

The concerned man then went to search for him by the river but found only his boat, Supt Roslan stated in a statement on Tuesday.

A search and rescue operation was immediately launched, involving the police, firemen, members of the Civil Defence Force, and local villagers.

The victim’s body was discovered around 9.50am the following day and has been sent to Tangkak Hospital for a post-mortem.

Bukit Gambir Fire Station commander Mohd Farizan Mokhtar said the river is about 30m deep.

He said the operation was hampered by rain and was called off at 8pm on Monday.

"The victim's body was found by members of the public the next day, roughly 2km from the location where he was reported missing," he added.
