SHAH ALAM: Several areas in the Klang Valley were affected by flash floods and landslides following heavy rainfall since early yesterday, causing massive traffic jams on several highways and roads.
Selangor Fire and Rescue Department assistant director Ahmad Mukhlis Mukhtar said the worst-affected areas were Sungai Buloh, Petaling Jaya and Subang Jaya where eighty-six homes were affected, though no evacuations were reported.
Water levels reached almost one metre in Kampung Paya Jaras Hilir, Sungai Buloh, affecting 80 homes, but they receded several minutes later.
Meanwhile, in Kampung Baru Sungai Buloh, six homes were inundated with water levels as high as 0.6m, but the affected residents declined to evacuate as water levels subsided later.
Flooding also occurred in Kampung Kubu Gajah, Sungai Buloh, where villagers were caught off guard, as many were still asleep when their homes were inundated.
Ahmad Mukhlis also said, a car was stranded when the water level rose to 0.6m.
He added that a female driver in her 50s was rescued by members of the public after floodwaters rose to 1.5m along Jalan PJU 1A/46 in Petaling Jaya.
In another incident, the embankment of a retention pond in Taman Sri Alam, Saujana Utama, gave way again following heavy rain in the area.
“The collapse caused water from the pond to overflow, flooding the area up to 0.3m and affecting 35 homes,” he said.
On Dec 29 last year, the same embankment collapsed, affecting around 200 homes in the surrounding area.
In Taman Tun Dr Ismail, Kuala Lumpur, a wall in an international school gave way after a landslide.
Kuala Lumpur Fire and Rescue Department operations commander Azkhan Hamdan said none of the students or nearby residents were harmed in the incident, which is believed to have occurred at around 7am.
“The incident affected two vehicles and parts of the school building, including classrooms, a staff room, toilets and the library.
“The team then inspected the area to ensure the situation was safe,” he said.
A landslide also occurred in Jalan Haji Abdullah in Sungai Merab, which blocked the main road entering and leaving the area. However, there were no victims.
