PETALING JAYA: The health struggles of former national race walker G. Saravanan - who is currently bedridden in hospital - have drawn the attention of Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim.
Acting on the Prime Minister’s behalf, his political secretary Datuk Ahmad Farhan Fauzi visited the 1998 Commonwealth Games gold medallist on Friday (April 18) to offer a contribution and moral support.
Deputy Youth and Sports Minister Adam Adli and representatives from the National Athletes Welfare Foundation (Yakeb) were also present during the visit.
“His battle with illness has deeply moved the Prime Minister and his wife. I was honoured to visit Saravanan today on their behalf to deliver a contribution as a gesture of concern and encouragement.
“I also took the opportunity to listen to his story. Although his speech is now limited, the strength of his spirit is unmistakable, a true reflection of the courage with which he is facing this challenge. The fire of a champion still burns within him,” said Farhan.
Saravanan is deeply moved by the outpouring of support from various individuals and organisations that have stepped in to assist him as he struggles to raise funds for his medical expenses.
"I am truly touched and grateful for the presence of Datuk Farhan, who is representing Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim. I never expected them to be aware of my condition.
"Regardless, I want to thank everyone who has supported me throughout my journey. I will never forget the assistance I’ve received from Yakeb since day one," said Saravanan.
Since being diagnosed with Motor Neurone Disease in 2021, Saravanan’s physical condition has deteriorated significantly.
He has lost the ability to control his movements properly, and the illness has also affected his speech and caused challenges with eating.
The same illness that Saravanan is battling now claimed the life of national football legend Mokhtar Dahari, who passed away in 1991.
