Crackdown on illegal gambling during tournament

KUALA LUMPUR: Police have launched Ops Soga XI nationwide to crack down on illegal gambling activities that are expected to surge in conjunction with the 2026 FIFA World Cup that starts from tomorrow until July 19.

Bukit Aman Criminal Investigation Department (CID) director Datuk M. Kumar said that the integrated operation involves all state contingents.

“This operation focuses on monitoring and taking action against online gambling and betting involving online gambling syndicates, platforms or websites conducting online gambling and betting activities, as well as promotions via social media accounts.

“The operation also targets physical gambling and betting activities involving illegal gambling and betting premises, individuals who place bets, betting agents and premises or individuals promoting physical gambling and betting,” he said in a statement yesterday, Bernama reported.

Kumar added that the operation is also joined by various enforcement and regulatory agencies, including the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) and Bank Negara Malaysia, to identify and block platforms, websites and transactions used by illegal gambling and betting syndicates.

He advised the public to not get involved in any form of illegal gambling and betting, whether as players, punters, agents, bookmakers or organisers.

“Strict action will be taken under the relevant provisions of the law, including the Common Gaming Houses Act 1953, the Betting Act 1953, the Penal Code, as well as the Anti-Money Laundering, Anti-Terrorism Financing and Proceeds of Unlawful Activities Act 2001 (Amlatfpuaa),” he said.
