TEMERLOH: In the serene town of Mentakab, hundreds of Catholics gathered to solemnly observe Good Friday, one of the most sacred days in the Christian calendar.
The atmosphere at the Church of Our Lady of Perpetual Help was filled with deep reflection, reverence, and spiritual unity.
Despite the sweltering afternoon heat, the church was packed for the 3pm service on Friday (April 18), commemorating the crucifixion and death of Jesus Christ.
Many arrived early, eager to participate in this significant part of Holy Week.
Parish Priest, Rev Father Terrance Thomas, expressed his appreciation for the strong turnout and the devotion shown by the congregation.
"Many parishioners didn’t want to miss the Good Friday service. It’s not just about tradition, but about coming together as a faith community to reflect on the sacrifice of Christ. It's also a meaningful time for people to reconnect, greet one another, and support each other in faith," he said.
Father Terrance noted that the church’s congregation is diverse, comprising locals and Catholics from East Malaysia, including those stationed in Mentakab due to roles in the military or government departments.
"This blend of cultures and backgrounds brings unique warmth and inclusivity to the parish community," he said in an interview on Friday (April 18).
Reflecting on the church's humble beginnings, Father Terrance shared that it was established in 1963 and has since grown into a central place of worship, especially during Holy Week.
"Holy Week is a significant time for Catholics worldwide, and here in Mentakab, it brings people together in prayer and reflection," he said.
The church also welcomes visitors from outside Pahang to join this special occasion.
The week-long observances, beginning with Palm Sunday and continuing through Holy Wednesday, Maundy Thursday, Good Friday, and culminating with Easter Sunday, are marked by various liturgical ceremonies, prayers, and acts of devotion.
Each day carries its own meaning, but Good Friday remains one of the most solemn and powerful, traditionally including the reading of the Passion of Christ, veneration of the cross, and Holy Communion.
For many in Mentakab, Holy Week is more than just a religious tradition—it is a time of renewal, remembrance, and reaffirmation of faith.
As the community prepares for the joy of Easter Sunday, the spirit of community and devotion remains strong.
