Soldier on trial for hitting woman driver pleads not guilty to damaging her car

SEREMBAN: A 35-year-old soldier claimed trial in the Magistrate's court here to a charge of causing damage to a woman's car following a minor traffic incident.

Abdul Hafiz Abu Bakar pleaded not guilty to the charge after it was read to him before magistrate Nurul Saqinah Rosli.

He was charged with committing the offence against the 28-year-old woman around 10.20pm on March 29 at Taman Satria in Senawang.

He was charged with mischief for causing damage to the driver's door.

Abdul Hafiz was charged under Section 427 of the Penal Code, which carries a jail term of between one and five years or a fine or both upon conviction.

Deputy public prosecutor Nadia Ezzati Mohd Zainal then asked the court to set bail at RM8,000 pending remention of the case.

The accused who was represented by Syed Fadil Syed Othman asked for a low amount as he had to provide for his wife and two young children.

The accused, he said, was also not a flight risk as he had voluntarily appeared in court.

Magistrate Nurul Saqinah then set bail at RM2,000 with one surety and fixed May 19 for remention.

On Monday, the accused had also claimed trial to a charge of punching the same victim at the same place and time.

He is out on an RM2,000 bail.

According to media reports, the victim suffered bruises on her right rib and swelling on the back of her head due to the alleged assault.

The incident occurred when the woman, who was driving a car, failed to avoid the man’s wife, 34, and their seven-year-old daughter, who suddenly crossed the road, resulting in minor injuries to both.

A 22-second video which shows the suspect attacking the female driver went viral on social media.
