KUCHING: The site verification and feasibility study for the New Kuching International Airport (NKIA) has been completed, with Tanjung Embang as the recommended site, says Datuk Seri Lee Kim Shin.
The state Transport Minister said the study concluded that the site is operationally and technically feasible, aligning with Sarawak's goals to strengthen connectivity and long-term economic growth.
"The study assessed key factors, including airspace requirements, land use compatibility, infrastructure connectivity, environmental considerations, as well as passenger and cargo growth potential, in support of Sarawak’s aspiration to become a regional aviation and logistics hub," he said in his winding-up speech at the Sarawak Legislative Assembly on Monday (May 18).
Following this, Lee said his ministry will submit an airport development request to the Transport Ministry for development approval.
"The next phase will focus on land acquisition, site preparation and detailed design, paving the way for the commencement of physical construction of the New Kuching International Airport," he said.
Lee also said the Federal Government had approved a new ceiling cost of RM445mil for the Miri Airport upgrading project, up from RM150mil.
He said this would enhance passenger capacity, operational efficiency, safety standards and overall airport facilities, including expanding the terminal building, aircraft parking bays and passenger processing systems.
Upon completion, Miri Airport’s capacity will increase from two million passengers per annum to four million.
"As the second busiest airport in Sarawak and the main hub for rural air services currently operated by AirBorneo, Miri Airport plays a critical role in connecting urban centres with rural and interior areas throughout Sarawak and Sabah.
"The Sarawak government remains fully committed to supporting the Federal Government and all implementing agencies to ensure the successful and timely implementation of this strategic aviation infrastructure project," Lee added.
