Putra Heights inferno: Relief centres to close today

SHAH ALAM: The two temporary relief centres (PPS) for the Putra Heights gas pipeline blast will close by the end of the week, with Dewan Camelia's centre closing on Wednesday (April 9) night.

Selangor Mentri Besar Datuk Seri Amirudin Shari said on Wednesday (April 9) that officers from the Petaling District Office and Welfare Department would help relocate those sheltering at the PPS to more comfortable Airbnb accommodation.

“For residents of the Putra Heights mosque relief centre, the registration process for Airbnb homestays will begin on Wednesday (April 9) and is expected to be completed by Sunday,” said Amirudin.

He added that relocated families would receive free groceries like rice, flour, and cooking oil for a month, and said that 270 houses are structurally safe and can be occupied after repairs.

“This is based on the specification ascertained by the Fire and Rescue Department whereby electricity and water supply can be re-channelled to these houses which are fit for occupancy.

“For houses with minor damage that can be repaired, there will be a standard allocation determined by the recovery committee,” he added.

Amirudin said volunteers led by Serve (Selangor Volunteer), in cooperation with Team Selangor, will clean affected housing areas starting Wednesday.

“About 1,000 volunteers will be on duty this Saturday and Sunday. Those who want to be involved can register with Serve,” said Amirudin.

The mentri besar also said a mobile van from the Selangor Land and Mines Office will be sent to issue replacement house titles free of charge. After meeting with the residents, especially those at the relief centres, I found some had lost their house titles in the mishap,” he said.

Amirudin added that as a show of solidarity and to alleviate the burden, the state’s top administrative officials, elected representatives, and senior civil servants will contribute to the relief fund set up for the blast victims.

State exco members and top civil servants will contribute RM1,000 each. State assemblymen will donate RM200 each, local councillors will give RM100 each, and all Grade 48 and above officers will contribute RM50 from this month’s wages.
