Three dead in Lenggong sewer gas incident

IPOH: Three men were believed to have been overcome by sewer gas and suffocated at a construction site in Kampung Ibol, Lenggong, Gerik.

Perak Fire and Rescue Department operations division assistant director Sabarodzi Nor Ahmad said two of them, aged 29 and 37, died at the location while the third victim, from Indonesia, died at the hospital.

Sabarodzi said the department had received an emergency call that seven people were trapped in the sewer shaft yesterday at about 10am.

“They were conducting cleaning work in the 2.4m-deep sewer shaft.

“Five of them were brought out by members of the public and sent to the nearest clinic,” Sabarodzi said in a statement yesterday.

“Firemen then went down the shaft, tied ropes around the two remaining victims and pulled them up,” he said.

“Medical personnel confirmed their deaths, and their bodies have been handed over to the police for further action,” he added.
